The snorkel hat is created using a simple stockinette stitch base with cylinders sewn all over the base.

This knitted cap sports a stuffed, snorkel-shaped tube at the top. Here's how to knit it.Materials: yarn - 2 skeins of Claudia Hand Chunky in Ingrid's Blues Skacel Addi Turbo size 8 circular needles - 16" length Skacel Addi Turbo size 10 circular needles - 16" length Crystal Palace Bamboo size 8 double-pointed needles Crystal Palace Bamboo size 10 double-pointed needles stitch marker tapestry needles wool roving or polyester fiberfill Gauge 3.5 stitches = 1" in Stockinette st With size 10 needles, cast on 72 stitches.
- Place stitch marker and join sts in the round, being careful not to twist sts.
- Continue in the round until piece measures approximately 6", or about 31 rounds (figure A).
- Begin decreasing as follows:
- First round: *k2tog, k6, rep from * to end of round (63 sts remain)
- Next round: knit
- Next round: *k2tog, k5, rep from * to end (54 sts remain)
- Next round: knit
- Next round: *k2tog, k4, rep from * to end (45 sts remain
- Next round: knit
- Next round: *k2tog, k3, rep from * to end (36 sts remain)
- Switch to double pointed needles (figure B), removing the stitch marker.
- Next round: knit
- Next round: *k2tog, k2, rep from * to end (27 sts remain)
- Next round: knit
- Next round: *k2tog, k1, rep from * to end (18 sts remain)
- Begin using the size 8 circular needles and continue working the 18 remaining stitches without further decreasing until "cylinder" measures approximately 9" (figure C), bind off all sts.
- Stuff wool roving or polyester fiberfill inside cylinder from the inside of the hat (figure D) until it is uniformly shaped throughout. Bend the cylinder over and attach to side of the hat by seaming it right to the surface.
- With one size 8 double-pointed needle, cast on 18 sts, divide evenly over 3 double-pointed needles. Work as many rows as you would like and bind off each cylinder. Attach at the top wherever you would like all over the hat (figure E). You can make 3, 4, 12 or more! The more you add, the funkier the design will be. Weave in all ends.
