Knitting expert and designer Iris Schreier, the author of Modular Knits: New Techniques for Today's Knitters (Lark, 2005) and Exquisite Little Knits (Lark, 2004), demonstrates her method of modular knitting.
Basic Information for Mod KnitsAbbreviations: K1inc1 Knit into the front and back of the same stitch (an increase of 1 stitch). SSK Slip next 2 stitches from 1 needle to the other, one at a time as if to knit them; then place point of left needle through the front of both slipped stitches and knit them with the right needle from this position (a decrease of 1 stitch). Turn Move the left needle to the right hand and the right needle to the left hand so you're in a position to knit in the opposite direction. Bring the yarn to the back. Note: Be careful not to stop in the middle of a row, so as not to lose your place. Use a sticky note or marker to mark each row so you don't lose your place.
