  • Fibonacci Accessories: Capelet
  • As summer turns to fall, a capelet will warm your shoulders without adding weight or bulk.
    From "Knitty Gritty"
    episode DKNG-410

This capelet is worked from the neck down to the lower edge (that way you can decide when it's long enough). Work in Fibonacci stripes (see the scarf), using lighter-weight yarns at the top, bulkier-weight yarns (or combinations of yarns) the bottom. Weave in the ends as you go.

Size: The capelet is about 16" long and about 64" around at the bottom.

    Materials:

a collection of yarns just like you had for the scarf
    circular needles, U.S. sizes 9, 10, 11, 13, 15, 17 /5.5, 6, 6.5, 8, 9, 10, 12.75 mm
    One big button
    crochet hook, U.S. size J (10)

Gauge: This capelet is shaped by using increasingly larger needles, so you want the gauge of the fabric at the top to be tighter than the gauge of the fabric at the bottom. Aim for about 4-1/2 stitches per 1" at the beginning.

    Knitting the capelet:
Use the smallest needle and loosely cast on (using the long-tail cast-on) 95. You'll be working in garter stitch back and forth, so don't join the stitches in the round. Work about 4", then change to the next larger size needle and work about 2"-3". Keep changing to the next larger needle every 2"-3 ", then continue until the capelet is 16" or whatever length you want. As with the scarf, work the last Fibonacci stripe one row shy of completion, then bind off very loosely.

Sew a big button to the upper left front. Using the crochet hook, attach some yarn about 1" inside the top right corner of the capelet, opposite the button. Chain for as long as you need to make a loop that will go around the button. Fasten off the chain and pull the tail to the back of the fabric. Tie the beginning and ending tails of the chain together, then weave them in to the back of the fabric to hide. While you're at it, hide any other errant yarn tails.
