Camo Earflap Hat You don't have to be a skier to love this warm (and funky) earflap cap! From "Knitty Gritty" episode DKNG-404

The Souza family enjoys both skiing and the fiber arts. Together, Judy Souza and her kids, Katie and Davis, create a great camouflage ski cap with orange flair. The earflaps are made, the body of the hat is worked in the round, and a pompon and crochet edging finish the hat.

Sizes: large child/small adult (large adult)

Materials:

Camo Earflap Hat

1 skein Lorna's Laces Shepherd Bulky
140 yds. 100% superwash wool
small amount of contrasting yarn for trim and pompons
needles: double-point needles, U.S. size 10, 16" circular, U.S. size 10 (or sizes needed to obtain gauge)

Gauge: 3 stitches = 1"

Abbreviations:
co cast on
inc knit into the front and back of the stitch
k knit
k2 tog knit 2 stitches together as one
p purl
rep repeat the directions between the *
st stitch

Begin with the first earflap:
Co 7.
Row 1: p.
Row 2: inc in the 1st and last st (9 sts) (figure A).
Row 3 and every odd row: p.
Row 4: inc in the 1st and last st (11 sts).
Row 6: inc in the 1st and last sts (13 sts) (figure B).

Work these 13 sts as follows: k even rows and p odd rows until earflap measures 3", ending after a k row. Cut yarn and place on a stitch holder.

Set this aside, and make another one in the same manner.

Leave 2nd flap on the circular needle and co 20 (24). The easiest way to do this is by turning the work to the back and using the cable co.
Pick up the 1st flap from the stitch holders (be sure that the right side of the flap is facing in the correct direction) (figure C).
Co the remaining 14 (16).
You should have a total of 60 (66).
Place a marker at the end and join, being careful not to twist.
Knit in the round until hat measures 6"-7" from the bottom (not including the earflaps) (figure D).

Begin decreases (switch to double-points when stitches become too tight on circular needles) (figure E):
Row 1: * k4, k2 tog*.
Row 2 and every other even row *k*.
Row 3: * k3, k2 tog*.
Row 5: * k2 ,k2 tog*.
Row 7: * k1,k2 tog*.
Row 9: * k2 tog *.

Finishing:

Cut yarn, leaving a 6" tail, and thread through a yarn needle. Thread through the remaining sts and pull together. Fasten tightly and tie off (figure F), leaving the tail if you want to add a pompon or tassel (figure G). Weave in ends.

Single-crochet around the edge in contrasting yarn for a finished edge (figure H). If you wish, also add lengths of braided yarn to the earflaps (figure I).
