Hand-dyeing yarn results in subtle and distinctive color variations, but this technique will produce more marked variations.
Materials:Cushings dye rubber gloves pH strips dust mask wet sponge for cleaning up spills white vinegar nonreactive dyepot (such as enamel or stainless steel) heat source apron garbage bags cotton string optional: water softener Prepare the yarn to dye and the dyebath the same way you would for immersion dyeing. Once you have washed the yarn to be dyed, lay it on a clean countertop. Here are two ways to create resists; the idea is to keep the dye from penetrating these areas. Plastic Ties Cut plastic garbage bag into 12"x1" strips (wider if you wish more area to be covered). Wrap these strips tightly at various intervals a few times around the yarn and secure with an overhand knot (figure A). Dye the yarn, rinse well and allow to dry. Remove the strips to reveal the original color underneath (figure B).

Spring FrenzyWrap a strong cotton string tightly around a prepared skein of yarn in the same way you would tie a T-shirt for tie-dyeing (figure C). There is no right or wrong way to do this: just have fun! You want to make sure that the string is tied snugly so that the dye will not penetrate the area under the string. Dye the yarn, rinse well and allow to dry. Remove the strips and see light bands of the original color on your yarn!

Knit Bit: No more wire hangers! Don't abuse your knits by using those nasty little wire hangers--take care of them. Just take it off and fold it and avoid those nasty little bumps.
