Knitwear designer Lisa Daniels, the creative director for Muench Yarns, joins host Vickie Howell to show her some stylish knit skirts. Among the techniques she'll be demonstrating, we'll learn how to knit a fabulous flounce with an eyelet pattern. Get ready to be the envy of your knitting circle!

Flounced Striped Skirt

Knit-O-Meter Rating: Intermediate.

Sizes
To fit sizes 8/10 and 12/14. Directions are for the smaller size, with larger sizes in parentheses. If there is only one figure, it applies to all sizes.

Materials
Muench GGH Bali: 3 balls khaki, 2 balls olive, 1 turquoise and 1 red
One each U.S. size 3 and 5 circular needles
Ribbon or elastic for waist

Note: Remember that many yarns are seasonal and could be discontinued. If the specific yarn called for is not available, purchase a substitution yarn that comes closest to the specified gauge in your pattern. And be sure to make that all-important swatch to see whether the yarn works for your particular pattern.

Gauge: 20 sts and 28-29 rows each to 4" (10 cm)

Measuring tip: You can measure yourself -- or you can measure a skirt you already own -- to get the dimensions for this project.

Note: This skirt is in stockinette, which means that when you're knitting on circular needles, all you have to do it knit (no purling necessary)!

Work skirt in rounds from top down.
Cast on 160 (176) sts. khaki on smaller needle and work in welt (ribbing) pattern (alt K2 P2) 2 rounds khaki and 16 rounds olive (figure A).
Change to larger needles (figure B), and work the following stripe sequence in st. st.:
1 round olive, *2 rounds turquoise, 8 rounds khaki, 2 rounds olive, 4 rounds each khaki, red, and khaki, 2 rounds olive, 8 rounds khaki, 2 rounds turquoise, 6 rounds olive, 4 rounds khaki, 2 rounds red, 4 rounds khaki, 6 rounds olive, rep once from *, 2 rounds turquoise, 8 rounds khaki, 2 rounds olive, 4 rounds khaki, 4 rounds red, 1 round kahki (138 rounds).
The 138 rounds should measure 53 cm.
The rounds changes become less conspicuous if you cut the thread after every round change and darn away the ends later (figure C). Pulled-up threads make the pattern uneven.

Knit Bit: Did you know that when you use the longtail method of casting on, you are actually knitting your first row as you cast on? Way to double-task!
