Charm and Toreador ribbed poncho with ribbon
The poncho, that most ubiquitous of garments from the '60s and '70s, is back -- and it's better than ever! Here, Fayla Reiss demonstrates her design for a poncho with beautiful texture and variety -- and a stitch pattern that even a beginner can master in no time. Forget about crying over dropped stitches -- learn a technique for incorporating them into your knitting, and then wait for the compliments to start dropping into your lap!

    Knit-O-Meter Rating: Beginner.

    Materials
8 balls Trendsetter Charm (Ocean Sky)
2 Lane Borgosesia Toreador #141 (Teal)
1 spool Hanah Silk Forest Shadow
1 spool Hanah Silk Cooper Patina
    U.S. size 9 knitting needles
    U.S. size G crochet hook

Note: Remember that many yarns are seasonal and could be discontinued. If the specific yarn called for is not available, purchase a substitution yarn that comes closest to the specified gauge in your pattern. And be sure to make that all-important swatch to see whether the yarn works for your particular pattern.

    Poncho
With size 9 needles and Toreador and Charm, cast on 83 stitches. Work as follows:
First Row: *K4, K2-together, Yo*. Repeat *to* ending, K5 (83 stitches should remain on needle).
    Next Row: Purl entire row
Continue in pattern [*K4, K2-together, Yo*. Repeat *to* ending K5; purl back] until 56" from the beginning, ending with a knit row.

    Figure B
Work as follows to create the drop stitch:
*K5, drop 1 stitch off needle*. Repeat to ending, K5 (figure A).

    Poncho finishing
Pull the drop stitch back to the very beginning, which should be a Yo from the first row.
Stretch piece to open up the knitting (figure B).

    Optional finishing
Lightly steam rectangle with a damp cloth.

Using Hanah Silk and crochet hook, work 1 row of crochet, * 1 single crochet, 1 chain.* Repeat around three sides of poncho.
Fold in half and sew one side of the poncho, beginning at the bottom and leaving a 12" opening for the head.
Single-crochet with ribbon around the neck opening.

Note: Piece is knit as a long rectangle and then folded, leaving an opening for the head. The piece is knit in stockinette stitch, and then every few stitches are dropped to allow for a looser fit and more open look for the overall piece. This poncho can be turned in all directions, depending on where you want the extra fabric.
