Rectangles are the most common thing novice knitters make, and beginners usually limit themselves to scarves. But if you just add on more stitches, you can have some really great items that are just as easy to make as a scarf. On today's show we reinvent the rectangle to learn a few new ways to use them in funky garments. Joining host Vickie Howell and the Knitsters is special guest Fayla Reiss, of Trendsetter Yarns, who will show some of her designs that utilize only the one simple shape in their construction.

    Knit-O-Meter Rating: Beginner.

    Materials
8 balls Trendsetter Liberty (color #118)
2 balls Trendsetter Segue (color #118)
    U.S. size 10-1/2 knitting needles
    U.S. size H crochet hook

Note: Remember that many yarns are seasonal and could be discontinued. If the specific yarn called for is not available, purchase a substitution yarn that comes closest to the specified gauge in your pattern. And be sure to make that all-important swatch to see whether the yarn works for your particular pattern.

With 10-1/2 needles and Liberty, cast on 58 stitches and knit in stockinette for 80".
    Bind off loosely.

Using Segue, cut 28 butterfly ties approximately 16" long and set aside.
Fold shawl in half and place safety pin on both sides to mark middle.
Fold in half again (equal halves) and place safety pin on both sides to mark.

    Lay shawl flat

At first safety pin, tie four butterfly ties across row evenly (figure A).
    Repeat at each safety-pin marker.

At the corner of cast-on edge, attach Segue ribbon with slipstitch, chain 10*, single crochet, skip approximately across 1-1/4" across row, single crochet in next stitch, chain 10*. Repeat around entire shawl and join with a slipstitch to beginning stitch.

Optional: Fringe three sides of the shawl with Segue, making 16" length and attaching with crochet hook inside the loops.

Knit-Bit: You can make a great case for your knitting needles with just two pieces of cloth, some iron-on interfacing and some ribbon (figure B).

    1. With right sides facing and the interfacing on the back, stitch all the way around, leaving a 1/4" seam allowance. Don't forget to leave a space to turn it right side out.

    2. Once you've turned the fabric right side out, fold up the bottom about -1/2", sew channels to create pockets for the needles, attach the ribbon -- and you're ready to store your needles!
