Now that you've removed the collar from your turtleneck sweater, you must take a few steps to determine how to refashion the neckline. Keep in mind that although you can't change the basic shape of a neckline (e.g., a crewneck sweater can't be turned into a V-neck), you can rejuvenate a sweater with a new collar or a neckband knit from a contrasting color or a different texture.

Take a moment to think about the garment's structure and the yarns you've chosen:- Does the garment have a stitch pattern?
- How is the contrasting yarn going to behave? Will it be stiff or floppy?
- Decide on what sort of neckline you'd like. You might choose to rib your neckline; to make a simple stockinette rolled neck; or to make it a cowl or a turtleneck.

Picking up stitches (to see a step-by-step demo, click on the video link below) ...

If your sweater had a bound-off neck edge, it's time to pick up stitches. Beginning at one of the shoulder seams and working from the right side of the garment, pick up 3 stitches per inch, since that's the gauge of the Berroco Pronto we're using. Be mindful that your stitches are picked up correctly and not twisted. Each stitch has two legs of a loop. The leading leg should always be on the front of the needle for knit or purl stitches. If you encounter a twisted stitch, you can either correct it or knit it through the back loop when you come to it. Once you've picked up stitches all the way around, the hard part is over. Working from one shoulder seam, attach your contrast yarn and begin knitting in the round. If you have difficulty working with a single circular needle, sometimes it's easier to work with two. When you collar reaches the desired length, bind off stitches loosely.
