    When you're deciding on an edging for a piece of knitting, try to find one that relates in some way to the body of the project. For instance, this sweater has a wavy stitch pattern, so the ideal edging is one that mimics the waves (figure A). The edging may look a little intimidating, but it's created by simply stacking increases over increases and decreases over decreases.

    Materials
    Brown Sheep Yarn Company's Cotton Fleece yarns
    Size 6 (4.00 mm) bamboo knitting needles

    Cast on a multiple of 14 sts.
    Row 1 (RS): *K2tog, K4, yarn over, K2, yarn over, K4, SSK. Repeat from * across.
    Row 2: K6, *P2, K12. Repeat from * across, ending with P2, K6.
    Repeat Rows 1 and 2 until ripple measures approx. 2". Continue in Stockinette Stitch for the rest of the piece.

    Knit Bit: There are lots of ways to give your knits cool edgings. Here's one that's simple and stylish, courtesy of Elizabeth Marmugl of Needful Yarns: Use a synthetic suede-like ribbon to jazz up a simple knit poncho. Run lengths of ribbon through evenly spaced stitches and tie each piece in half by looping it back through itself to create a simple fringe of tassels. Then run a longer piece of the ribbon through stitches around the neck of the poncho and use it as a drawstring for a decorative — and functional — touch.
