Reiss says textured yarn helps beginners hide mistakes.

Knitting keeps Fayla Reiss up at night. Reiss knitted as a child and says she will even come home from dinner parties, sit down in her evening attire and knit until early in the morning. Reiss transformed a spare bedroom into a knitting room -- complete with supplies, works-in-progress and her knitting machine.

Reiss prefers to knit by hand with nubby, textured yarns that allow her to hide any mistakes and knit faster, but she also uses her knitting machine for uniform knitting. The machine uses a punchcard to program the pattern into the machine. Reiss says a used machine can be purchased for about $300.

Reiss further utilizes modern technology in this traditional needlecraft: with a calculator and a computer she can calculate patterns and print them for referral.
