- As she nears the completion of this planting project, host Maureen Gilmer turns her attention to the area opposite the walkway. She begins by "spotting" plants in the space to mirror the facing foundation plantings.
Tip: To create a natural look, plant each species in odd numbers and sporadic placement; nature does not plant in pairs or perfect grids.
- Once Gilmer has achieved the right layout, she sets to work planting, first digging out each area (figure A), then inserting the designated plant (figure B).
- To cover posts or columns and add vertical interest, Gilmer plants Clematis vines at the base of each post (figure C).
Note: Clematis should be planted with their roots on the shade and their foliage in the sun.
- Once planted, Gilmer wraps the foliage around each post in a spiral fashion using Velcro garden tape (figure D) looped firmly around galvanized nails (figure E) for support.
Note: As the vines continue to grow, more support will be needed to continue to train them to spiral around posts.
