To continue beautifying the narrow strip of shaded property between the house and its garage, host Mayita Dinos installs concrete pavers and a variety of shade-loving plants.

    Featured plant varieties include:

    • Ajuga reptans 'Catlin's Giant' (Catlin's Giant Carpet Bugle)
    • Buxus microphylla 'Winter Gem' (Winter Gem Boxwood Topiary Pyramid)
    • Cupressus sempervirens 'Monshelby' (Tiny Tower Italian Cypress)
    • Gardenia x 'Kleim's Hardy' (Kleim's Hardy Gardenia)
    • Ligustrum texanum (Texas Privet Patio Tree)
    • Liriope muscari'Silvery Sunproof' (Silvery Sunrpoof Lilyturg)
    • Mandevilla amabilis 'Rita Marie Green' (Pink Parfait Mandevilla)

    Steps:

    1. Measure out from the wall 24 inches for the baseline for the pavers.

    2. Lay a line of pavers along the baseline.

    3. Offset the rows of pavers to create a serrated edge for plants.

    4. Plant the liriopes in the openings of the paver edges to soften the edges.

    5. Plant the topiaries on either side of the trelliage.

    6. Plant the vines beneath the other trellis, leaving the trellis sticks from the nursery in place while you plant them.

    7. Carefully untie the vines from the trellis sticks, and gently unfurl the individual vines from the stick. Pull the trellis sticks out and lay the vines on the ground.

    8. Starting with the longest vine stem, carefully weave it in and out of the trellis, moving upward as you progress. Try to weave in such a way that any flowers are facing the garden space. Make sure enough of the vine is twined onto the trellis so that the vine is supported.

    9. Continue this process with all of the vine stems.
