Adding the Planters and Hose Guide Finials

    • Having completed the curb stone edging, the gravel-lined paths and the center square of pavers (figure A), host Mayita Dinos and crew are now ready to add the finishing touches to the hardscape of this jardin potager.

    • To create visual definition at the ends of the paths and give visitors a "reward" as they draw near the perimeters of the garden, four large French-style planters are placed at the paths' outer reaches (figure B).

Note: These dramatic square planters will be filled with a variety of beautiful plants during the second phase of this project.

    • Next, Dinos and the crew add four hose guide finials at each corner of the center square. Functional as well as decorative, these elements will add another French touch to the look of the garden and will prevent a garden hose from becoming tangled when it's used to water the parterres (figure C).

    • To secure the finial stakes, Dinos simply holds each one in its designated position, then uses a rubber mallet to drive it into the ground (figure D) until only the finial is visible.

    • With these finishing touches, the hardscape of the jardin potager is now complete and ready for plants, which Dinos and the crew will plant in the next phase of this project (featured in the following episode).

    • In comparing an image of the plain, unlandscaped area as it looked before (figure E) with an image of the new hardscape (figure F), it's clear the transformation of this backyard is well on its way to a perfect finish!
