John Knox, co-host of HGTV's Breaking Ground, visits Natasha Hopkinson's tiny urban garden, where vines contribute privacy and beauty.
The garden posed some serious challenges: high brick walls, neighbors on all sides, heat, a lack of air circulation and little sun. The goal was to create beautiful views from the windows in all seasons. The back wall was covered with a white trellis, and a Japanese maple (Acer palmatum) was planted in front of the trellis to add depth (figure A). Wisteria was planted along a fence-top trellis to add spring color and provide additional privacy. To hide a gate in the brick wall, a white trellis was installed, and ivy was trained on wire arches bolted into the wall (figure B). Large urns were added to flank both sides of the patio doors and planted with evergreen weeping hemlock.
