There's not too much left to do on the workshop before it's ready to get to work. Insulation is important, and this is the right stage for it to be added. The insulation we're using comes in rolls and is precut to fit between the wall studs (figure A). To make installation even easier, it comes with a paper flange that makes fastening it to the sides of the studs a breeze. The interior walls of the workshop need to be finished once the insulation is up, but drywall isn't the best choice for a workshop. Instead, something should be used that will be more durable and that will provide plenty of support for heavy objects that may need to be hung. Chris Hubbuch, of Gladiator Garageworks, shows his company's innovative wall treatment (figure B) that mounts on wall studs and provides plenty of support. Made of PVC (polyvinyl chloride, a durable plastic with many construction applications), it comes in 1'x8' panels that can be cut to fit any wall size. It installs easily, but like siding, each course must be kept level. Simply cut with a jigsaw to fit around windows and doors. Secure each section to the studs with the manufacturer's recommended fastener. Then apply the trim pieces for a finished look (figure C). After the walls have been finished, you can install your choice of hooks and hangers, which install into the patented T-slot design (figure D) and easily repositioned should your needs change. Each hook and basket (figure E) is rated at 50 pounds; a gear box (figure F) is available that is rated at 200 pounds. You can also get a gear-drawer cabinet (figure G) with locking heavy-duty casters for floor storage. The finishing touches come next: - Completing the electrical connections
- Adding pegboard on the short walls where the slatwall would be less practical
- Constructing barn-type doors for the entrance, using basic framing techniques.
Finally some landscaping is done -- the lot leveled and plants and a stone pathway added -- and our workshop is complete.
