  • Gardening Quick-Tip: Bed Borders

A well-edged flower-bed looks neater, and makes grass-cutting easier. You can edge your flower bed with rocks, stones or wood. But one of the simplest methods is to create a trench.

    • Use your garden hose as a guide. Lay it out to define the border and create a curve that you like. When you've settled on one, use a square-head spade to cut along the edge of the hose. Dig straight down, or at an angle up to 45 degrees.

    • Remove the grass and excess soil you remove, and toss it aside. Work your way along the hose until the entire trench is dug.

    • Smooth out the edges with a hoe. Also use your hoe to keep the trench clear of weeds later on.
