The native plants in the completed garden not only look great but will bring a variety of nature's creatures within easy viewing distance (figure A). Although you need to make sure to stick to plants that are native to your region, there will always be beautiful options. For example, the trumpet-shaped flowers of the Timeless Beauty Desert Willow ( Chilopsis linearis 'Monhews') attracts hummingbirds in droves and is a great choice for the southwestern part of the country, where the number of suitable plants are limited (figure B). Expert tip (James Folsom, garden curator): Choosing the right native plant for your area means you're choosing a plant that is preadapted to grow right where you live. And that's a low-maintenance choice! Instructions: - Plant medium-sized understory natives beneath the trees. These should be plants that require partial sunlight since the trees will shade them for at least part of the day.
- In front of the medium row of natives, plant smaller, herbaceous and perennial groundcover natives that will add color to your garden.
- Install a birdbath in the center of the garden (figure C). The birdbath will combine with your native plants to offer wildlife sources of food and water.
- Cover the entire area with mulch and water the new garden thoroughly.
