Layout a length of weed-prevention fabric and cut to size (figure A). Position the cut length where the path will be laid (figure B). Using a wheelbarrow, pour pea gravel on top of weed burial fabric and spread with a rake or shovel (figure C). The pea gravel will serve as the walkway, so apply a thick layer that can withstand foot traffic without exposing weed fabric underneath. Add mulch at the base of your plantings and all the way to the gravel path to dress up the soil and help the plants retain moisture (figure D). Adding mulch after pea gravel will create a more precise edge along the walkway. Place a bench at the end of the gravel walkway from which to view the garden. FYI: - You can use wood scraps from tree-trimming companies for mulch.
- Weed-control fabric allows water to penetrate, feeding plants nearby.
- High-traffic areas require more gravel to maintain coverage.
- The trunks of two cypress trees have been trained into the topiary braid shown beside the bench in figure E.
