Any healthy leaves that fall can be turned into a type of mulch called leafmold. Just rake the leaves into a large, heavy-duty plastic bag (being careful not to pierce the bag) and add a few handfuls of grass clippings or other fresh cuttings. If the leaves or the clippings are dry, water well. Close the bag and place in an out-of-the-way location for at least a year (two years if you wish to use the leafmold as a planting soil).
