    Figure C

John Greenlee, the author of The Encyclopedia of Ornamental Grasses, shares tips on creating a lawn even if the only space you have is a rooftop. He shows a variety of ornamental grasses that can be grown in containers (figure A), including Liriope Spicata "Silver Dragon" (foreground); Phormium "New Zealand Flax" (right); and he shows how the addition of a couple of varieties, such as Sesleria Autumnalis "Autumn Moor Grass" (foreground), Carex Buchananii "Brown Sedge" (back), African Daisy "Mira" (left), can turn a pot of flowers into a "lawn in a can" (figure B).

    Top-Secret Tip

Eric Hansen, the turf manager for Los Angeles Dodger Stadium, explains that the characteristic checkerboard pattern in the stadium's turf (figure C) is created by mowing the grass in four directions using a reel mower with a bar in back.
