Vinyl Tile Wall ArtMaterials: 10-12 self-adhesive vinyl tiles sharp utility knife carpenter's square solid backing material acrylic paints and brushes acrylic grout or caulk
- Purchase a variety of inexpensive, self-adhesive vinyl floor tiles. Make sure to get a variety of styles, colors and patterns.
- Trim away all the excess backing paper that hangs over the edges of each tile.
- Use a carpenter's square and a utility knife to cut each tile into quarters. To cut the tile, score a line down the center of the tile with the utility knife (figure A). Fold the tile on the score line, then finish the cut with the knife (figure B).
- Place a hard backing material on a work surface. Michele Beschen used 1/2" drywall for her backing. Lay out the tiles on the backing, mixing up the tile designs and getting all edges snug with each other.
- Use acrylic paints to paint a design of your choice right over the top of the tiles (figure C).
- When the paint is dry, gently spread the tile pieces slightly apart, creating room for a grout line (figure D). Take care to space the tiles evenly so the grout line will be consistent across the whole piece.
- Starting with the corner pieces, remove the paper from thetiles and adhere them to the rigid backing material. Peel and stick one tile at a time, using the other tiles as a guide.
- Once all of the tiles are stuck down, use acrylic grout or caulk to fill in the grout lines (figure E). Smooth out the grout lines with a small paintbrush dipped in water.
- Touch up the painting if necessary.
- When the grout is dry, hang the piece and let those vinyl wall tiles gain some respect as a unique art canvas.
