    Materials:

    Interior spackling paste
    Spreader
    Fine-grit sandpaper or sanding block

    Steps:

    1. For exposed drywall (figure A), use an interior spackling paste, applied with a spreader, to fill in any holes or dents. The spackle may have to be applied in several layers -- it's okay if the spackled surface turns out a little rough (figure B).

    2. Once the spackle is dry, go over the area with a fine-grit sandpaper or a sanding block. The clean, dry surface is now ready to be primed and papered.

    Priming

Applying a wall primer will help new wallpaper adhere and will also make the paper easier to remove. Simply stir the primer and paint it over the wall, using a brush or a roller.
