Cindy Piccoli, host of HGTV's Decorating With Style, shows how to make wallpaper to match your decor. By carving linoleum, you can get a hand-printed look with plenty of texture and style.

    Materials:

    Linoleum blocks
    Linoleum-cutting or wood-carving tools
    Scrap piece of wood
    Clamps
    Graphite paper
    Paint (oil- or water-based)
    Small sheet of glass
    Roller
    Brayer, roller or large spoon
White liner paper or painted printable paper
    Wallpaper paste and brush

    Tips:

    • Prepasted papers cannot be used for this project.

    • If you're using only one color, it's highly effective to create two versions of the same pattern, alternating the raised portions for a positive/negative carving.
    1. Purchase 1/8"-thick linoleum and apply it to a block of wood, or check art-supply stores for ready-made linoleum blocks and tools. Drive two small nails into a larger piece of wood around each side of the block to keep it from moving. Clamp the larger piece of wood to your worktable (figure A).

    2. Create a pattern and trace it onto the linoleum block with graphite paper (figure B).

    3. Cut away the outline of objects in the design, remembering that those areas not cut away will print. Push the cutting tools away from you as you work (figure C).

    4. Apply ink to a small sheet of glass, and spread it evenly with a foam brush.

    5. Roll the color onto the linoleum block with a foam brush.

    6. Test-print all designs on a scrap of paper first. Carefully place wallpaper on top of the linoleum block, and use a brayer, roller or spoon to apply pressure to print the image (figure D).

    7. Let the ink dry, and apply the wallpaper with wallpaper paste as directed by the manufacturer (figure E).
