A custom wallpaper border is a great project for child's room. This one adds storybook characters and baby blocks to a baby-blue window.

Here, roller-skating dogs cut from a wallpaper border are combined with blocks from a coordinating paper.

A customized window border can transform a room with just a bit of paint and cut-out pieces of wallpaper. This unique effect is achieved by pasting wallpaper pieces along a painted accent strip around a window.

    Materials:

    Latex interior paint
    Small paintbrush, suitable for trim
Prepasted wallpaper (if the wallpaper isn't prepasted, you'll need wallpaper primer)

    1. Paint the window frame with accent paint, extending the paint about 3" from the frame (figure A). This painted strip will be edged with wallpaper pieces, so the edge needn't be exact. The prepasted wall covering used in this project needs no primer, but some wall coverings require a base coat of wallpaper primer. If primer is necessary for your project, apply it with a brush no wider than the width of the planned border.

    2. Use scissors to cut out the wallpaper pieces. Small patterns don't work for this project; choose a good-sized pattern like those pictured here.

    3. Run a cut piece of prepasted wallpaper border through water to activate the glue (figure B).

    4. Apply the wallpaper strip along the painted accent border, aligning the center point of the wallpaper strip with the center point of the border (figure C).

    5. Wipe the freshly applied wallpaper with a damp rag to smooth out air bubbles and catch any dribbles (figure D).

    6. Continue the process around the window, stopping the rope border pattern 12" short of each corner to leave room to layer floral-patterned pieces (figure E). This eliminates the difficult step of mitering the border at the corners and adds interest as well.

    7. Cut flowers and leaves from the floral-patterned wallpaper to add to each corner (figure F).

    8. After dipping the cut-out pieces in water, apply to the wall, overlapping edges (figure G). The damp wallpaper pieces can be moved about and repositioned until you're pleased with the look.

    9. Wipe up dribbles and smooth each flowery corner with a damp cloth.

    10. Continue pasting floral wallpaper pieces around the window to form the corners of the border (figure H). Step back occasionally to get the big picture.
