Give an unfinished wooden trunk a frescoed Old World look with embossed wallpaper and a finishing technique using Liquid Chalk. Materials:
Unfinished wooden trunk Embossed wallpaper and border Razor blade or razor knife Liquid Chalk Sponge or cloth Brown paper Optional: matte-finish spray-on polyurethane - Soak a piece of embossed wallpaper or wallpaper border in water for about five minutes.
- Apply the paper to the surface of the trunk (figure A).
- Use a cloth to press the wallpaper firmly into place and smooth out any wrinkles.
- Trim the edges with a razor blade or knife. Let dry.
- When the trunk is covered and the paper is dry, apply a generous amount of Liquid Chalk to the surface (figure B).
- Use a damp cloth to wipe the entire surface, removing the excess Liquid Chalk so that the color is concentrated in the crevices of the design, leaving raised areas lighter. Let dry (figure C).
- Liquid Chalk can also be brushed onto the wooden surfaces for an antiqued appearance. Wipe to remove the excess and let dry.
- When the Liquid Chalk is completely dry, "sand" the unpapered areas with plain brown paper.
- Optional: Apply a coat of matte polyurethane to protect the finish.
