Both cable wires and phone wires are wired directly into the whole-house surge protector. This protector, which is wired into the breaker box, can protect electrical appliances, computers and home entertainment systems from a central location -- before it even has a chance to reach the smart home wiring panel.

This touch screen remote makes controlling your system easy. Simply touch the features you want to control on the screen. It can replace all other remotes in the home.

Systems designer Steve Eylar views his home's closed-circuit images on the Internet.

Today's homes have I.Q.s -- knowing when you enter and leave the home, powering entertainment components, controlling security systems, lighting and control internet and phone connections. Here, host Tom Corvin discusses the latest in home technology with integrated network specialist Loy Hutchison and systems designer Steve Eylar.

    Smart Home Wiring

    • Wiring in a smart home is integrated into one unit -- making it possible to control cable, phone, lighting, security and entertainment from just one area.

    • An integrated surge protector protects all the electrical equipment in the home at one time. The surge unit is wired directly into the breaker box to stop electrical surges before they reach the integrated network system.

    • With "smart house" features, a single button can turn on all house lights or outdoor lights -- or just the ones pre-selected and programmed into the system.

    • The alarm system is integrated into the "smart house" system.

    • With some systems, an automated voice system (hooked to speakers throughout the home) can alert homeowners to intruders or when someone has left or entered the home, or has simply left the door open.

    • Some systems feature a touch screen remote which can replace all remote controls for electronics, security lighting and closed-circuit cameras. The touch screen remote allows different areas of the home to be seen on a monitor or television in the home.

    • Many of the "smart home" systems can be armed or disarmed from anywhere in the world -- even on vacation -- as long as Internet access is available.

    • Smart systems "learn" your lifestyle patterns -- turning lights on at certain times or in certain areas.

    • Entertainment can be controlled over the entire home from a central entertainment console. In addition, smart home systems can also allow the viewer to select movies that have been digitally stored.

    • Driveway sensors can be wired to the home security part of the smart home system. Utilizing the sensors, the system can automatically light a path as the home is departed or entered. In addition, any pre-selected home lights will automatically come on upon the homeowner's return.
