Here are a few more ways to protect your home and signal to potential burglars that you're home isn't an easy target:

    • Outdoor motion detectors - When placed on a tree, pole or other stationery object, the detector can sense when a car or person is approaching your home.

    • Warning stickers - Whether or not you have a security alarm system in your home, the prominent display of warning stickers can sometimes be a deterrent. For those with a monitoring service, signs or stickers are often provided gratis.

    • Closed-Circuit Monitoring System - This system can be purchased for less than $250 and can monitor selected areas outside your home. Here, Tom Corvin demonstrates how easy this installation can be for a homeowner.

    Installing a Closed-Circuit Monitoring System

Keep in mind that the installation of your closed-circuit system may vary from these directions. Consult the manufacturer's directions before beginning.

    1. First, identify where you want to position the security camera(s).

    2. Begin by inserting the wire into the light housing (figure A).

    3. Hook the camera to the wire that has been inserted into the lighting housing (figure B).

    4. Tighten screws into the protective cover and camera to secure the two together.

    5. Use one of the enclosed plastic grommets to cover the remaining hole on the back of the protective light housing/cover.

    6. Add the protective lens to the front of the cover.

    7. Attach the mounting post to the unit, then secure the unit to the pre-selected area of your home (figure C). Attach the unit with screws or double-sided tape.

    8. Finally, run wiring into the house and attach to the back of the closed-circuit monitor.
