Host Tom Corvin demonstrates the installation of wireless devices that can augment existing security, or provide an economical alternative (most run $15-20 without a monthly fee) to a security monitoring service. Note: Wireless security systems do not direct-dial an alarm monitoring service in the event of an alarm trigger.

    1. First, mark holes for placement of console/keypad (figure A). Most kits have a template for marking the exact placement.

    2. Use a masonry bit to drill holes -- as marked -- into the wall near an entrance door.

    3. Next, place screw anchors into holes, tighten and allow anchors to extend past the wall surface about 1/4".

    4. Snap the console into place and tighten.

    5. Place the contact sensor on the edge of the door with the arrow pointing toward the console (figure B).

    6. Place the console sensor on the door jamb (figure C).

    7. To activate the alarm after installation, Corvin says, press code *, the code number, then * again. To arm the security alarm, enter the code number on the keypad, then press #. Be sure to check the alarm a couple of times, and practice activating and de-activating the alarm using the keypad.

    8. Finally, when installing a wireless glass-break detector, install it directly to a window pane (figure D). Test by rattling keys near the sensor.
