This indoor light sensor "knows" when you enter a room and tells the light to come on. Although this type requires the absence of a lamp shade, a plug is also available for use with other types of lamps.

A lock and door reinforcement plate helps prevent break-ins by strengthening the area where the door knob, lock mechanism and door opening meet.

Two important -- yet easily installed -- security measures involve doors and lighting. Here, host Tom Corvin covers lock and door reinforcement and a few types of lighting that can increase safety in your home.

    Corvin suggests the installation of:

    • Peep holes in the front entrance door
    • Lock and door reinforcement plate
    • An indoor light with motion sensor, power failure light or timer-controlled lighting as needed

Lock and Door Reinforcement Plate Installation

    1. Remove door knob and deadbolt knob on the door's surface, leaving the lock mechanisms in place.

    2. Next, mark the position of the plate and drill holes for the screws that will secure it in place.

    3. Install the plate and secure with sturdy screws (Corvin replaced the ones in the manufacturer's package with larger ones; brass sheet metal screws were used for the metal front door in the demonstration).

    4. After securing the plate, add knobs and tighten all into place.
