Installing a Keyed Sash Lock The installation of a keyed sash lock can give you control over when the windows are raised. This security measure can not only prevent your child from opening and falling out a window, but can also protect your family against intrusions. - First, drill two grommet holes in the upper window sash -- one at the base, and one about five inches up (figure A).
- Push grommet into the bottom hole.
- Insert keyed sash lock (figure B) on top of the lower window sash, aligned with the bottom grommet (figure C). Mark placement of screw holes.
- Drill small holes into the top surface of the bottom sash, then use a Phillips head screwdriver to secure the lock to the sash with screws.
- Place grommet in the upper hole.
- Test the window lock by sliding to the upper position and securing. Then, slide window back down and lock again. The window should be secure and should lock easily in either position.
