Before performing any CPR compressions, check for breathing by both listening and watching the chest for breathing, while taking pulse. CPR should only be performed by those who are certified through training. Others should call for help.

In the event of burns or injury, it's crucial to have a well-stocked first aid kit at hand. Here are some suggestions from Sergeant Dennis Rucker of what a good kit might include:

    • Sterile gauze
    • Antiseptic wipes
    • Burn cream
    • Scissors
    • Hot/cold pack
It's important that CPR be avoided by the untrained (who should, instead, call for help). If you are uncertified, consider a class at your local fire department, American Heart Association or the American Red Cross.
