The living room walls have been painted a vibrant shade of cranberry; now it's time to apply a Victorian-inspired decorative paint panel to the sofa wall (figure A).
Materials (Wall Panel): level/ruler pencil painter's tape Benjamin Moore paint #HC-143 (Wythe Blue) Benjamin Moore paint #HC15 (Caldwell Green) foam roller brushes paint tray double roller (with desired pattern) artist's brush(Bookshelf) sandpaper dust masks box brush, tack cloth foam brushes paint tray small sponge rollers black gesso Benjamin Moore semigloss paint #2133-10 (Onyx) Benjamin Moore paint #HC-143 (Wythe Blue) 1. For visual continuity, the top line of the panel matches the top line of the doorway. The panel is measured, leveled, taped and painted Wythe Blue (figure B). 2. The Victorian pattern is applied with a double roller. First, the patterned roller is removed from the handle and the plain roller is loaded with Caldwell Green paint. The pattern roller is then reattached to the plain roller (figure C).
3. To keep each vertical line of the pattern aligned with the previous line, Shannon Kaye marked the edge of the pattern roller with a blue X (figure D). She begins each line of pattern with the X at the top of the tape line. Before beginning each line, she hand-rolls the pattern roller to load it with paint (figure E).
4. She places the roller with the X positioned on the tape line and pulls straight down (figure F), making sure only the pattern roller touches the wall (figure G). She repeats the process until the panel is complete (figure H).
5. When the paint is completely dry, she removes the tape and, using an angled artist's brush, paints a narrow border around the edges of the panel (figure I).6. Next, the bookcase is sanded, using circular motions, to remove the surface coat (figure J).
7. After the bookcase has been dusted to remove any dust residue, black gesso (used to prepare artist canvas) is used to prime the surface of the bookcase. Because it's thick, it helps to create a richer look on the surface of the wood.8. When the primer has dried completely, semigloss Onyx paint is applied to the surface of the shelves. 9. When the paint is dry, a light coat of Wythe Blue is brushed over the back panel of the bookshelf; for a fresh, updated look, some of the original black paint is allowed to show through the blue paint (figure K).
