As you enter the house, both the entryway and the area leading off to the office present large openings. To decorate this area, a folk-art-inspired trellis of birch branches is used as a ceiling focal point above the space.

1. Nancy Golden removes the loose bark and paints the branches in colors that match the home decor (figure A). Note: For a natural-looking trellis, leave the branches unpainted and instead seal them with polyurethane. 2. Assemble the trellis as if you were building a raft, laying out the long bottom logs vertically and then placing the shorter top logs horizontally. When finished, this trellis measures 5'x3-1/2'. 3. Make sure the bottom branches are lying as flat as possible and to keep the structure manageable, begin by creating a box and attaching all four corners. 4. Predrill through the top log; this will act as a guide for the screw (figure B). Have a variety of screw sizes available to accommodate the various thicknesses of the branches. 5. After all four corners are predrilled, begin adjusting the bottom logs, and again predrill and screw, attaching each bottom branch to a branch making up the box frame. 6. After the ends are secure, lay the top branches along the frame; this will help determine the spacing of the top branches. Attach where the upper and lower branches touch, making sure there are at least two screws in each top log (figure C). Continue until all branches are firmly secured. 7. Predrill and screw eye hooks in the four corners. 8. Eyeball the placement of the unit at ceiling level; mark where the eyebolts will go and predrill the holes (figure D). Screw in the eyebolt anchor and the eyebolt. 9. Measure to make sure the hang cables are long enough to accommodate the measurements taken earlier, and hang the trellis. Time spent so far: 6 hours.
