The main part of the room makeover has been completed, and now comes the fun: adding accessories: pillows, decorative shelves, pictures on the walls, a buffet. Here are some final tips from Nancy Golden to help you make the most of your game room.

    Project time: 2 hours.

    • Always try to hang pictures at eye level.

    • Create a family message center on one wall with chalkboard paint and a simple wood frame.

    • If you're including a dedicated game table (figure A), consider the traffic patterns around it. You should always keep a minimum of 32" between each edge of the table and the wall.

    • Game tables are lower than dining tables so cards will be at eye level (to make it harder to cheat).

    • Lights that hang over the table are very important; they should hang about 30" from the top (figure B).

Expert tip: Use eyeball downlights or track lights to spotlight dim corners of a large room.

    • If your space is limited, use a sectional sofa instead of the usual sofa and loveseat -- the corner will add extra seating (figure C).

    • Keep the scale of furnishings generous to add importance to the room.

    • Keep in mind the rule of three: in this case, Golden used three large-scale pieces (coffee table, entertainment center and shelves) to balance the room (figure D).

    • A sisal rug can add another texture to a room.

    Total time spent: 12 hours.
