Now Golden turns her attention to the bar area. The bar itself needs more weight and scale, which will be added with an extra thickness of wood on the top and paneling across the front. Golden is also placing three corbels across the front; they give the appearance of supporting the bar but actually are there too add a design element. Lastly, large-scale pendant lights will be hung over the bar to brighten up the whole area.

    Project time: 3 hours.

    Materials
    Plywood
    Wood screws
    Drill
    Trim
    Corbels
    Shelves
    Bar lights

    Steps

    1. Measure the width and height of the bar frame.

    2. Make the appropriate cuts to the paneling.

    3. Attach the paneling under the counter using a trim gun.

    4. Cut 3/4" plywood to the specific measurements of the top of the bar.

Expert tip: The two sides of plywood are called "face" and "back." The face is generally made of better-quality wood.

    5. Place the plywood on top of the old bar and nail every 6"-12" until the bar top is secure.

Expert tip: Rather than recessing and covering the molding nails, make them a part of your design by using large-headed decorative tacks or wide-headed nails with graduated washers.

    6. Nail 1x2 pieces of trim all the way around the bar top.

    7. Decide on the placement of the corbels, making sure they are level, then begin installation by predrilling and screwing into position.

For the lighting, Golden is using a lighting kit that turns a simple lampshade into a pendant light. After adding a single light, she decides that its scale is large enough that the single light will work better than multiples.

    Steps

    1. Screw the first hook into the ceiling where you would like the light to be positioned.

    2. Screw the second hook in the back corner and run the cord the length of the wall.

Time spent so far: 7 hours.
