  • Shanghai Lounge: Finishing Touches
  • A final touch of rejuvenation for the fireplace completes the room makeover.
    From "Fresh Coat"
    episode DFCT-206

Mike and Cosima's outdated family room is close to completion: the walls, coffee table and wet bar have all undergone transforming paint treatments. Now it's time to update and lighten the look of the brick fireplace and put the room back together.

    1. The walls around the brick are taped off in preparation for the paint treatment.

    2. Lime paint with a lighter Titan Buff pigment powder added is used to lighten the color of the bricks (figure A. The technique this time is slightly different: the paint is first applied to the brick, and the paint pigment is rubbed directly into the wet paint.

    3. The paint is brushed over the surface of the brick to create a natural, varied look.

    4. Once the lime paint is on the brick, a brush is dipped in the pigment and scrubbed into the brick (figure B).

    5. A final coat of varnish, applied when the paint is dry to the touch, will seal and protect the painted surface.

    6. The room is put back together. New draperies are hung at the windows (figure C), but the rest of the room remains the same.

The old room was cold and dated, but the new colors and Asian details give the room a fun, hip flair (figure D). And all this was accomplished for just $180 for paint!
