    Cost of paint: $180.

Cosima and Mike Crane purchased his late grandmother's home. Although they plan to keep many of the household furnishings, they want to update the look of the house, especially the family room, whose furnishings, including the wet bar and fireplace, are dated in appearance but have great potential. All they need is a new look to make them more modern and functional.

Decorative painter and host Shannon Kaye finds her inspiration for the makeover in the room's Asian-inspired furnishings. Her plan includes textured red walls and a lighter paint treatment for the brick fireplace and the bar. The coffee table will receive a dark crackle paint treatment with a red detail that complements the red walls.

    1. Heavy rosin paper is rolled out and taped in place to protect the newly refurbished floors.

    2. Montana Agate, a dark orange color, is applied as a base coat on the walls (figure A). Prior to painting the walls, Shannon and crew use angled brushes to cut in along the room edges, creating a smooth paint line. The paint has an eggshell finish; the sealer in the finish will make the second glaze coat easier to apply. A flat-finish paint would absorb the glaze.

    3. While the paint dries and cures for 24 hours, Shannon and crew begin work on the coffee table. Wearing gloves and safety glasses, they move the table outside and place it on sawhorses to begin removing its glass panels.

    4. The table is scraped and sanded until the surface is smooth, and the gold trim is taped off prior to painting (figure B).

    5. A base coat of Moroccan Red paint is brushed over the table; the paint will dry overnight before a crackle finish is applied to the surface.
