  • Tiled Patio and Stone Retaining Wall: Evaluating the Situation
  • Tiled Patio and Stone Retaining Wall: Evaluating the Situation
    From "Grounds for Improvement"
    episode DGFI-106

Mark and Laura Shoffner's problem is a real stumper: their patio and retaining wall need help, thanks to a large tree stump that has cracked the former and shifted the latter. Professional estimates to correct the damage have ranged from $5,000 to $10, 000, so the Shoffners have gathered their friends together to help get the job done in one weekend (without help from friends, the project would take several weekends to complete). They're joined by Grounds for Improvement host Jackie Taylor and landscape designer Dean Hill for two days of hard -- but rewarding -- work.

Because the Shoffners have already had the first phase of the project, removal of the stump, professionally undertaken, three steps remain:

    • Removing and replacing the wall.

    • Laying tile over the concrete patio.

    • Building an arbor and adding plants.

The first step, removing and replacing the wall, requires some muscle: the team members use sledgehammers and everyone pitches in to simply start knocking the wall down. Then they have to dig a base for the new stone wall that will replace the old one. The base needs to be 10" deep and must be dug by hand.

Note: Keep in mind that the steps of this project are all being undertaken simultaneously by various members of the work team. To make it easier for you to follow what's being done, we're breaking them down into three separate projects.
