With the concrete foundation finished, the team hauls away wheelbarrow after wheelbarrow of sand from the yard and removes the plywood panels. The next step will be to add a 45-mill rubber pond liner to waterproof the fountain area.
With the liner in the hole, Dean gently removes the top layer of sod and smoothes the edges of the liner over the surface. Then he adds stone architectural pavers to cover the liner and hold it in place, letting the stones extend 6" over the edge of the hole (figure A). He and Craig cut away the excess liner and flatten the stones with a rubber mallet until they're level (figure B).
While Dean hammers concrete blocks in place to form the base of the pedestal, Craig and Alicia drill 3/4" holes in the center of a paving stone and the metal planter. The drilled stone is set atop the blocks and surmounted with the planter, and copper tubing is run up through the structure (figure C). Then a rubber hose is run under the pedestal and secured to the copper tube, and the other end of the hose is attached to the water pump (figure D). The pump will rest on the floor of the fountain, and the power will come from an outlet near the house, with the cable buried in the yard.
Finally, a bead of expanding foam sealant is run between the pavers and the liner to make the fountain watertight (figure E). Then a path of pavers, set 24" apart, is built from the house to the fountain (figure F).
