The bamboo fencing, which is 4-1/2' high, comes in 9' lengths and unrolls like a large placemat (figure A). They use it to screen out as much of the high foliage as possible -- and those overly vocal dogs. Installation is a simple matter of setting each section in the trench, tamping the sand around it, placing rebar at the end of each panel and tying the rebar and the sections together with rope (figure B). The rope nicely complements the look of the bamboo but is easily removable if necessary. The bamboo slats are held together horizontally with nylon line, and Dean recommends tying the knots above the nylon to keep them from ever sliding down.

    • Dig hole.

    • Add gravel.

    • Concrete walls.

    • Spread liner.

    • Add pavers.

    • Build pedestal.

    • Spread sealant.

Now that the bamboo screen is in place, the team turns its attention to the major part of the project: the fountain. First the location is chosen and marked. The hole that will be dug for the fountain will be 26" deep, 6' long and 6' wide; it will house a gravel-and-block foundation, the tall planter that will serve as the fountain, the pedestal, the pump system and the water source. Dean lays out large sheets of plywood to keep mess to a minimum by receiving the dirt that's dug from the hole.

Once the hole is deep enough, Dean marks the foundation and tamps down the sand (figure C), and the team starts shoveling gravel in place around the perimeter. The gravel is tamped down firmly (figure D), and concrete blocks are set on top of them, with gravel being added as needed to keep the blocks in place. Then two pieces of rebar are hammered into the soil through each block, another layer of blocks is added and more gravel shoveled into and around the blocks.
