Craig and Alicia Moss have a great backyard -- but they need a little privacy from the two small dogs next door. And they'd also like some landscaping features to act as a focal point in the space (figure A). Grounds for Improvement's Jackie Taylor and Dean Hill come to their rescue with a design that includes a bamboo screen along the neighbor's preexisting chain-link fence (figure B) and a great water feature for the middle of the yard.
The first step in the backyard makeover is to do a bit of prep work. Luckily, Craig and Alicia have a lot of friends who are willing to help -- and since quite a bit of digging is involved, their help will be greatly appreciated. Bamboo Screen
- Mark fence line.
- Dig trench.
- Install fence.
- Add support.
First the team must dig a trench 6"-8" deep for the bamboo fence. They run into a slight problem -- a water line. Dean explains that since the line is on the Mosses' property, all they have to do is dig behind the line, and it will then sit inside the bamboo fence.
