    While some of the team members finish building the deck, the others are busy with the landscaping. Old plants are dug up and thrown out, and a variety of perennials, ornamental grasses, summer flowering shrubs and evergreen shrubs are brought in to give the surroundings some style.

    • The team fills in the beds with several loads of fertilizer and mulch and adds the plants -- even an herbal container garden for Cedric.

    Dean has a final brainstorm: To give the deck a sense of enclosure without adding a roof, he adds 2x6s with decorative ends to the tops of the vertical posts (figure C) and attaches timbers to the tops to form the adjoining sides (figure D).
