Next up for the outdoor kitchen update is to add color to the walls with flower baskets. The Florida climate in which the Smarts live allows for almost year-round color, so Dean Hill has chosen durable year-round metal baskets for the wall (figure A). Filled with colorful annual plants, they will add just the pop of color needed to liven up the space.

To attach the baskets to the walls, it's important to use masonry anchors and a masonry bit. Hill and Tony Smart marked the walls and put in the anchors (figure B) before the wall was painted so that the paint covered any mistakes or marks.

Each basket contains a moss insert that will hold moisture yet provide adequate drainage. From time to time, the basket will need to be removed and hosed thoroughly to keep any clumps from clogging it.

Hill provides each family member with potting soil and various annuals and let them make the baskets. He suggests mixing textures in the same color group and adding height near the back of the basket.

While the family is playing with plants, Taylor and Carla Smart are painting the walls (figure C).
