Hill advises Carla Smart on the proper use of muriatic acid. The acid is going to be used for two reasons: the patio needs to be as clean as possible before painting, and the acid etches into the concrete (figure A) to help ensure a better seal with the paint. And that's a big plus for the Smarts: it means the paint won't chip easily.

Before using muriatic acid, it's essential that you wear proper clothing (figure B): long pants and sleeves, a mask and goggles are recommended. As with any chemical, it's strongly advised that all instructions be thoroughly reviewed and that someone experienced with the product be nearby to offer assistance and input.

After using the acid, thoroughly clean the sprayer so that no acid is mixed with the next substance. It's recommended that another sprayer be used for paint, if one is available.

Once the patio is cleaned, the paint is prepared for use. Taylor points out that the key to getting even coverage from any paint is to make sure you mix it well. This may seem like a simple step, but most people take mixing for granted. Even if your paint is mixed at the store, it's important to spend time stirring it before application. Use a mixing stick, and remember that the best way is to mix is from the bottom to the top.

If you're using more than one can of paint, it's advisable to mix paint from each can into the tray or sprayer so that those colors mix as well. Even if two cans of paint are mixed with the same formula, color variations can occur.

The paint is applied to the patio with a sprayer (figure C), but after it's applied and before it dries, Hill takes a roller to it to help work the paint into all the pores and crannies (figure D), as well as to even it out. Two coats of paint are necessary to give the patio an even feel; some patios may need more, depending on the quality of the paint and the color.

After cleaning and painting the patio, the next step is to paint the walls. A different color is used for the wall, but the application is the same. The sprayer is thoroughly cleaned before the second color is added. To get even coverage, it's important that you move your arm and then hit the trigger so that a blast of paint doesn't come out in one place. It's recommended that you practice first on a scrap piece of wood or an area that won't be seen.
