  • Refurbishing an Outdoor Kitchen: Evaluating the Situation
  • Refurbishing an Outdoor Kitchen: Evaluating the Situation
    From "Grounds for Improvement"
    episode DGFI-102

The outdoor kitchen in Carla and Tony Smart's backyard has fallen into disrepair: the grill area is rusted and unusable (figure A); grates on both sides of the grill are little more than debris collection points; and the entire area is suffering from the blahs. To replace the entire area would be costly, but our Grounds for Improvement team has come up with a way to make inexpensive aesthetic changes (figure B) that will restore function and usefulness to the area without breaking the bank.

Jackie Taylor and Dean Hill plan to help the Smarts achieve the following goals with their outdoor kitchen area:

    • Restore function to the grill.

    • Add fireplace function.

    • Add doors to the existing storage areas.

    • Spruce up the area with paint.

    • Add color through metal planters holding flower arrangements attached to the wall.

Family members are ready and willing to assist with the work to achieve the goals for the day. Be aware that if they were to tackle this project without their team of helpers, it would take longer than a weekend to complete.

Before any work can be done, the area must be cleared of debris. Leaves and other plant material have collected in the grill and storage area and the concrete slab needs to be power-washed. Small power washers are available at hardware stores, but it's recommended that you rent a larger model for more time-efficiency.
