  • Framing the Play Area
  • Framing the Play Area
    From "Grounds for Improvement"
    episode DGFI-101

The newly uncovered flowerbeds are given a 4" layer of commercial mulch. The mulch from the felled trees can't be used for this, as it hasn't decomposed yet and would rob the plants of nitrogen. But the Bradford pear mulch will be put to good use nonetheless: it's going to be added to the play area in a 4" layer to make a good surface for the kids to play on.

The team now has to put a border of 4x4 timbers all the way around the play area. Dean Hill recommends that they start at the location that will give them the most difficulty (probably where the felled trees formerly stood). First they must level the timbers in that section and then work around the perimeter, leveling the remaining earth based upon that area.

Finally, the area outside the framed playground is covered with sod, working from the timber border outward across the lawn (figure A).

The DeFrancos now have open space for playing and a new play structure that will give their kids years of fun.
