    (Continued from page 2)

Katie and April make extra seating for the room by sewing a comfy box cushion for the hearth. The cushion is made from durable green fabric and adorned decorative buttons.

    Materials:

    fabric (Waverly 669863 Linear Spa)
    scissors
    chalk
    pins
    sewing machine
    foam (precut to desired size)
    batting
    buttons

    1. Place a piece of batting around the precut foam to give it a soft edge.

    2. Cut two pieces of fabric for the top and bottom, the same size as the foam plus a few inches for seam allowance. Then cut four strips, 2" taller than the cushion, one for each side of the box cushion.

    3. Place the foam on the backside of the top and bottom pieces and trace around the foam with chalk. This will give a sew line for later.

    4. Put the side pieces together with right sides together and pin at the corners. Sew down the sides. Then refit the foam to make sure no other alterations need to be made. Trim any excess fabric.

    5. Align the top piece with the sides, matching up the corners first. Pin all the way around and sew. Repeat the process on the bottom but leave a hole large enough to insert the foam.

    6. Turn the fabric right side out, insert the foam and hand stitch closed.

    7. For an added decorative element, add fabric covered buttons.
