  • Round Ottoman and Ottoman Skirt
  • The Girls show homeowner Mitch how to upholster a round ottoman.
    From "Material Girls"
    episode DMTG-112

In this segment, Mitch's steady girlfriend, Susan, helps him paint the walls of his living room a dark navy blue. Then Kelly and Mitch get started on making a custom ottoman by cushioning the top of a store-bought base with foam, batting and faux leather. They tuft the center with a large button they create themselves.

    Ottoman

    Materials:

    ottoman
    fabric
    foam
    drill
    spray adhesive
    scissors
    batting
    staple gun/staples
    button
    needle/thread

    1. Start by drilling two holes in center top of your ottoman (figure A); this is where the button will be added later.

    2. Spray the entire top of the ottoman with spray adhesive and attach a precut piece of foam of desired thickness (we used 4") to the top (figure B).

    3. Cut a piece of batting to fit over the foam. Cover the foam with batting (figure C) and attach it to the ottoman using a staple gun (figure D).

    4. Next cut the fabric to fit over the foam and batting. Staple it in place, making sure to smooth down all the edges for a more finished look (figure E).

    5. Next attach the skirt (see instructions, below) using a strip of cardboard tack strip. Lay the fabric with the tack strip on top along the bottom of the ottoman and staple in place.

    6. Next attach the button using a thick needle and upholstery thread. Thread the needle through the predrilled hole, going through the foam, batting and fabric. Take this thread through one of the buttons holes, repeat the process through the second hole and tie the two threads together.

    Ottoman Skirt

    Materials:

    fabric
    scissors
    sewing machine
    pins
    measuring tape
    pencil/fabric marker
    staple gun/staples

    1. Cut the fabric twice the size of the ottoman and fold in half with the print sides together. Sew a straight stitch on each side and turn right side out.

    2. Next we want to create the pleats. Decide on the number of pleats you want. Measure the fabric accordingly and mark with a pencil or fabric marker.

    3. Fold the pleats and sew a straight stitch along the top.

    4. Now simply staple the skirt to the ottoman underneath the fabric.
