  • Finishing Touches: Fabric Wall Art, Bed Skirt, Decorative Pillows
  • The Girls add final accessories to give the bedroom its distinctive flair.
    From "Material Girls"
    episode DMTG-111

Now for the finishing touches that April, Kelly and Cat add to complete the room: Cat makes the bed luxurious with Euro shams and throw pillows; Kelly hangs a fabric art collage over the bed; a chaise receives more pillows and a throw; and sheer curtains soften light without obstructing the view.

    Fabric Wall Art
    Fabric Wall Art

    Materials:

    fabric (several various complementary fabrics)
stretched canvas of desired size (choose several varying sizes)
    scissors
    staple gun/staples
    drill
    screws

    1. Pick a fabric with an interesting or distinctive pattern.

    2. Buy a stretched canvas at your local crafts store, according to the size you want the wall art.

    3. Cut fabric to fit the canvas, adding 1/2" on each side to staple it to the back.

    4. Stretch the fabric over the canvas, stapling it on the back. Start stapling in the middle, working your way to the corners and alternating sides as you go. Miter the corners.

    5. Trim away the excess fabric.

    6. Repeat on canvases of various sizes using various complementary fabrics.

    7. Attach the finished canvases together, using screws on the backs of the frames.

    8. Hang the canvases on the wall with a nail or a picture hanger.

    Bed Skirt

    Materials:

    fabric
    lining
    scissors
    sewing machine/needle and thread
    measuring tape
    heavy thread

    1. Decide what the drop is (from the tip of the box springs to the floor). Cut strips 6" more than desired length; this will give enough fabric for the top edge of the box spring.

    2. Cut the fabric three times the measurement of the length of each side of the box springs. Cut a lining to match.

    3. Place the faces of the fabric together and sew at the bottom edge. Turn under and press.

    4. Sew the pieces together and gather them with a heavy thread, using a baste stitch. Gather to desired thickness.

    5. Serge across the top and pin to the side of the bed.

    Decorative Pillows

    Materials:

    fabric
    scissors
    sewing machine/needle and thread
    pins
    pillow insert

    1. Cut two pieces of fabric to desired size of pillow, making sure to add extra for the seam allowance

    2. Place the two pieces of cut fabric with wrong sides together, and stitch around three of the four sides. On the fourth side sew around corners and leave an opening to insert the pillow form.

    3. Turn the fabric right side out and insert the pillow form.

    4. Pin the opening closed and hand-stitch shut.
